Drik ICT

Drik Family

Overview

It was twenty-two years ago. A small group of people set up a picture agency in the unlikely location of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Named Drik, the Sanskrit word for vision, the agency set out to represent a group of media professionals that other agencies did not cater for, practitioners living and working in the majority world. In the years that have followed, many others from Asia, Africa and Latin America have joined the original group. All of them share a common vision; one that sees the majority world, not as fodder for disaster reporting, but as a vibrant source of human energy and a challenge to an exploitative global economic system.

It is the bonding that leads us to our success in past years and gave us the courage to contribute more in the society by extending the ICT oriented services in large scale.

Drik

Drik, Bangladesh is a distinctive multimedia organization that has made challenging social inequality its central driving force. Over the last two decades Drik has successfully partnered with national and international organizations to conduct several successful socially responsible programs. Investigative reporting is an essential part of these programs. Credibility of information combined with powerful images presented in these projects have made it possible for Drik to bring out into the open opaque and delicate social issues for public debate and discussion.

Thus, inherent in Drik’s work is this ability to use the power of the visual medium to educate, inform and draw powerful emotional responses to influence public opinion.

The services and activities of Drik are: Audio Visual, Drik Picture Agency, Gallery & Event Management, Photography, Publication, Articles, Calendars, Exhibitions, and News Networks. Read more >>

Drik News

Images shape our perceptions. The manufacture of consent has rarely been more engineered. With everything from wars to presidential campaigns being stage managed and with mainstream news increasingly fed by official sources, reliance on usual sources of news images has become increasingly dangerous.

Majority world countries suffer particularly from stereotypical representations, and while the media worldwide is increasingly being dominated by a few players, it becomes particularly important for news sources to be diverse and varied. With Getty and Corbis controlling the stock market, and Reuters, AP, AFP and EPA dominating the wires, communities in the west are looking for new ways to challenge established media, especially through citizen journalism. The majority world has traditionally been represented by white, middle class, western photographers. But having local photographers is not in itself sufficient. While editorial control remains in the North, stories will continue to have a northern slant, and the only way in which this can be challenged is through alternative sources being formed that are independent of western and corporate media.

DrikNEWS is designed to fill this void. This agency, an independent body of Drik Picture Library, aims to cover news photography and investigative reporting by disseminating both locally and internationally through the web. Read More >>

Drik TV

While there has been a dramatic rise in the number of television stations in Bangladesh, the nature of such entities involves huge investment of capital and large bureaucracies. As such these organizations are controlled either by state or corporate interest.

The advent of new media has created opportunities for leaner, faster moving, on-the-fly reporting that has its finger on the pulse on the key issues that concern the public. Not dependent on advertising revenues and free of the inertia of big budgets, these entities are able to reflect the aspirations of the person on the street, like no previous technology could.

Drik has always played a pioneering role having initiated the nation’s first picture library, web portal, school of photography, email network and media academy. Mobile phones are the folk media of the future and DrikTV takes innovation to a new step by providing content especially designed for the person on the street.

Relevant, topical, entertaining and accurate, DrikTV will be broadcasting content that current TV is incapable of covering, or is afraid to broach. It is people’s media in the truest sense of the word. Read more >>
